Subsidized cooking gas prices rise 20% in a year while crude oil falls 40%

New Delhi: Cooking gas subsidy has fallen to zero for many customers as the net price paid by domestic users has risen 20% in the past year even as crude oil rates are down 40%. Some customers are still getting a small subsidy as the final price depends on local transportation cost.Monthly increase in the net price for subsidised consumers and the recent collapse in global rates has helped end the subsidy. With kerosene subsidy already eliminated since March, the end of the subsidy on liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) is a relief for the government at a time its revenue collection is stressed by the impact of the pandemic on the economy. The price of a subsidised 14-kg LPG cylinder in Delhi has risen from Rs 497 in June last year to Rs 593. The subsidy for a customer in Delhi has fallen from Rs 240 to zero in the same period. However, this can change if LPG costs rise. The Petroleum Ministry, Indian Oil, HPCL and BPCL didn’t respond to ET’s query on LPG price hike. But a Petroleum Ministry’s...

Team India may lose Nike logo after 14 years

Mumbai: The Indian cricket team may soon have to let go of kit partner Nike, as the cricket board and the sportswear brand are locked in a tussle over contract renewal. With Nike, it is in the board’s hands to retain the partnership that dates back to 2006. “Nike’s current deal as ‘kit partner’ of the BCCI is ending in September. The four-year deal worth Rs 370 crore included Rs 85 lakh per match fee and an annual royalty of Rs 12-15 crore to the board,” said a top source in BCCI. “Nike’s business has greatly suffered during the lockdown and it is seeking extension for lost time at a discount. The board may not agree and we may have to come up with tender.” Both Nike and BCCI did not respond to ET’s queries. Nifty companies’ ability to service debt comes under pressure

The economic slowdown aggravated by the nationwide lockdown has severely affected the ability of companies to service debt. According to the ET Intelligence Group’s analysis of the 32 of the Nifty 50 companies that have declared results so far excluding banking and finance companies, the aggregate interest coverage ratio for FY20 fell to a six year low of three after staying between four and six since FY15. The trend is expected to continue in the current fiscal given the expectations of contraction in the economic activities. The interest coverage ratio is calculated by dividing EBIT with the interest payment in a given period. A higher ratio is desirable since it implies a better ability to service the debt and also a greater comfort in borrowing more in the future. The fall was steeper on a quarterly basis. The ratio was at a 13-quarter low of 1.8 in the March 2020 quarter. It was at 3.9 a quarter ago. The contraction was on account of a steady rise in borrowings, which kept the inter...

Jain says shareholding has not topped 25%; filing was an error

The underlying undertone of the market is very strong, says the CEO of IIFL Finance. I was just going through the clarification that you have handed out to the exchanges. The earlier release showed that promoter holding has crossed 25% and now you are saying it is not exceeded. The keyword being used here is voting rights. Help me understand what really is the rationale behind your promoter holding now?We have filed a revised filing today. There was a technical error in yesterday’s filing. Out of the promoter holding shares that I have purchased, two and a half lakh shares were supposed to be transferred in the promoter group entities. So that has been missed out and has been corrected today. So the correct holding and the voting rights are 24.99% and that is what we clarified. I think the revised filing has also been done on the exchanges on the NSE and BSE website.I understand that the latest clarification by you on the exchange says that you have not taken delivery but till yesterda...

Global gear vendors oppose DoT diktat on mandatory local testing

Global telecom vendors such as Ericsson, Nokia, ZTE and Huawei are likely to oppose the telecom department’s diktat to run mandatory safety checks on imported network gear from October 1 via local labs, saying it will only result in duplication of certification activity, disrupting network gear availability in India and delaying 4G network rollouts by at least 6-to-9 months. They are set to write to the Department of Telecommunications (DoT) that their equipment is anyways certified by accredited private global labs before deployment in India, and will press the government to defer the in-country screening deadline. DoT’s decision though has enthused local telecom gear makers, who say the move will counter security threats posed by Chinese telecom gear. The DoT, in a circular dated June 23, has mandated that all kinds of telecom transmission gear, passive optical network (PON) equipment used in last mile broadband connectivity and network feedback devices will have to undergo in-countr...

How Postman became a unicorn in just 6 years

"10 million developers on the Postman platform now,” Abhinav Asthana tweeted on February 7. The company’s 32-year-old CEO was retweeted by Postman’s official handle. Both have modest followings on Twitter and, therefore, the milestone didn’t make much of a splash. That changed on June 11. That’s when Postman announced it had raised $150 million in venture capital at an enterprise valuation of $2 billion. The wider world sat up and took note. As in the world outside of the community of some 25 million-odd software programmers — the folks for whom “hello world” is not just a randomly cheerful phrase (it is a simple program that coders first learn). In that universe, Postman is something of a standard. It makes a specific task in software engineering — talking to other applications — very easy. And fortunately for Postman, the web evolved in the last few years in a direction that moved such connections from the fringes of software architecture towards the centre. But for everyone else...
