IPL 2022: Lucknow Super Giants record 20-run win as Punjab Kings fluff run chase

Lucknow Super Giants pounced on the mistakes of a self-destructing Punjab Kings to record a 20-run win in the Indian Premier League here on Friday. Kagiso Rabada struck four times as Punjab Kings upped their game in the bowling department to restrict Lucknow Super Giants to 153 for eight. It should have been a straight forward chase but Punjab fluffed to end at 133 for eight in 20 overs. Pacer Dushmantha Chameera (2/17) and Krunal Pandya (2/11) led LSG’s spirted bowling effort but they were also aided by the recklessness of the Punjab batters who struggled to convert starts, including skipper Mayank Agarwal (25), Liam Livingstone (18) and Jonny Bairstow (32). Left-arm pacer Mohsin Khan also ended with three wickets. Rishi Dhawan (21 not out) tried his best to bring back Punjab from the dead but it proved to be too much of a task. A sixth win in nine games takes IPL debutants LSG closer to a play-off berth while the task gets tougher for Punjab who have only four wins in nine game...

Bajaj Auto Q4 profit rises 10% at ‘1,469 crore

Bajaj Auto on Wednesday reported a 10% year-on-year growth in net profit for the three months to March at `1,469 crore even as revenues from operations declined 7% y-o-y to `7,975 crore. The better-than-expected numbers were the result of a better product mix and good realisations. The Bajaj Auto stock closed at `3,898.60 apiece on the NSE on Wednesday, slightly above Tuesday’s close. The two-wheeler manufacturer reported an operating profit margin of 17.5% for Q4FY22, down from 18.1% in Q4FY21, a compression of 60 basis points. However, the margins were much better than the 15.6% registered in Q3FY22. The sequential expansion in margins has been attributed to better realisations, an improved sales mix and a favourable currency impact. The average selling price (ASP) of Bajaj Auto’s vehicles went up by 10% to `79,129 in Q4FY22 from `71,925 in Q4FY21. In the December quarter, the ASP was `74,537. Sensex rises 1.4%, posts third-best gains in April; snaps two-day losing streak

Sensex and Nifty staged a sharp recovery on Tuesday after sustained selling in the previous sessions, in tandem with Asian markets. The overnight rally on Wall Street and China’s pledge to boost monetary-policy support for its Covid-hit economy also boosted investor sentiment on Tuesday, said market watchers.  On Tuesday, India was also the top performer among other Asian markets. China’s Shanghai Composite declined 1.4% on Tuesday, whereas Nikkei 225 and Hang Seng advanced just 0.4% and 0.3%, respectively. While the Sensex settled 776.72 points or 1.4% higher at 57,356.61, the broader Nifty-50 ended higher by 246.85 points or 1.5% at 17,200.80. Heavyweight Reliance Industries and Bajaj Finance were the top contributors to the Sensex’s gain on Tuesday — marking the third-best session for the benchmark so far in April. Shrikant Chouhan, head of equity research (retail), Kotak Securities, said, “While markets are in an oversold position, the falling yields in US markets and sliding...

IPL 2022: Riyan Parag, bowlers hand Rajasthan Royals 29-run win over Royal Challengers Bangalore

Riyan Parag smashed a match-defining unbeaten half-century before the bowling unit lived up to its reputation to hand Rajasthan Royals a 29-run win over Royal Challengers Bangalore in an Indian Premier League match here on Tuesday. Parag (56 not out off 31 balls) single-handedly took his side to 144 for 8 with his unbeaten half-century, which is his highest score in IPL. He struck three boundaries and four sixes during his knock. Parag marshalled the RR lower-order brilliantly and smashed Harshal Patel for a boundary and two huge sixes in the final over to take RR to a decent total after being sent in to bat. But RCB’s chase never got going as RR bowlers, led by young Kuldeep Sen (4/20), Ravichandran Ashwin (3/17) and Prasidh Krishna (2/23), bundled out RR for 115 in 19.3 overs. Opening the innings on the back of two consecutive first-ball ducks, Virat Kohli started on a cagey note but lit up the stadium and raised hopes of his fans when he struck two back-to-back boundaries of Tre...

NCLAT reserves order on Amazon plea in Future case

The National Company Law Appellate Tribunal (NCLAT) on Monday reserved its order in the matter concerning Amazon challenge to the order of the Competition Commission of India, which in December 2021 suspended its earlier order approving the deal with Future Coupons, a Future Group entity. The CCI order has a bearing on Amazon challenging the August 2020 deal Future Retail struck with Reliance Retail in various legal forums. The deal was aborted late last week after it failed to get the approval of the lenders of Future Group. “Hearing is completed. The judgment is reserved,” said the two-member NCLAT bench comprising Justice M Venugopal and VP Singh. In its December 17, 2021 order, the anti-trust regulator had said an approval granted to Amazon over two years earlier to acquire a 49% stake in Future Coupons (FCPL) would ‘stand in abeyance,’ as the firm suppressed information while seeking clearance. The CCI also imposed a Rs 202 crore penalty on Amazon. The CCI’s order was on compla...

Given a chance to reboot, most Chief Information Officers (CIOs) would replace half or more of their company’s technology, even as they are being asked to make business decisions beyond technology. The roles of CIOs have evolved over the past few years. They are now shedding light on growing areas of responsibility, have increasing influence in the C-suite (executive-level officers) and are involved in removing barriers to business growth, according to a global study by Lenovo. A majority of CIOs believe their role in the organisation has increased in influence, it said. About 57% of the CIOs surveyed said they would like to replace half or more of their company’s current technology considering new challenges and evolving responsibilities. Further, CIOs suggest that their current technology stack has much room for improvement. Compared to the previous year, 63% of companies are using more Device-as-a-Service in their tech stack, it said. Nine-in-10 of the CIOs surveyed said that t...

Fed rate statement, FPI outflows weigh: Stocks tumble on global sell-off, RIL tanks 2.3%

The equity markets tumbled for the second consecutive session on Monday after a broad-based sell-off in the Asian markets, amid fears of tighter restrictions and a wider lockdown in Beijing. Hawkish comments from the US Federal Reserve to raise interest rates by as much as 50 basis points (bps) in May and unbated selling from overseas investors continued to weigh on the markets. The market’s fear gauge – India VIX – surged more than 15% to close at 21.26 on Monday, after being in a range of 18-19 for the last three weeks. In the last two trading sessions, investors have lost Rs 6.5 trillion in wealth, as the market capitalisation of all BSE-listed companies fell to Rs 265.30 trillion on Monday from Rs 271.77 trillion on Friday. Benchmarks close in the red in seven of the last nine sessions with each of them coming off about 5% during the period. Prolonged China lockdown could impact domestic automobile companies’ operations

The operations of domestic automobile manufacturers may get further impacted if the lockdown in several cities of China, including Shanghai, to check Covid-19 infections gets prolonged. The global semiconductor shortage has already forced original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) to take production cuts. The supply chain disruptions due to multiple Covid-19 waves and the recent Russia-Ukraine war have not helped the matter either. Honda Motorcycle & Scooter India president, MD and CEO Atsushi Ogata recently told FE that the company is witnessing some impact on the production of a few of its models, which use smaller chips imported from China, as activities have been suspended at the Shanghai port. “But the impact of Shanghai lockdown is a recent one. The major problem is chip shortage, not only for Honda Motorcycle & Scooter India but all the automakers globally,” Ogata said. A Tata Motors spokesperson said that the automobile industry, in particular, continues to struggle wi...

Interview: Kartik Hajela, Co-Founder & COO, Log9 Materials

Last week, Log9 Materials—the battery-technology and deep-tech start-up—launched what it said is India’s first indigenous cell manufacturing line, in Bengaluru. With this facility—claimed to be the largest in Southeast Asia—Log9 Materials aims to achieve at least 50 MWh (megawatt-hour) of peak cell production capacity in one year. “At a time when majority cells and batteries used in India’s electric vehicles (EVs) are being imported, this development adds a new lease of life for the country’s mobility vision to turn to electric significantly by 2030,” says Kartik Hajela, co-founder & COO, Log9 Materials. In an interview with FE’s Vikram Chaudhary, he also explains why some EVs caught fire recently. Excerpts : What is the end-goal of the cell manufacturing plant you have started? A life in chains: ‘Azad Nagar: The Story of a 21st-Century Slave Revolt’

It was only a year or two before he and his neighbors staged a slave revolt that Ramphal even began to conceive of his own freedom—or his own enslavement. Ramphal had never thought to question his family’s relationship with the local landlord. His early memories were of his parents harvesting grain for a wealthy family in the small town of Sonbarsa, in southern Uttar Pradesh, about three hours west of Varanasi. The landlord paid his parents a little more than a kilogram of rice per month. From that and whatever fruits or grains they could grow near their homes or gather from the forest, they fed themselves, their parents, and their five small children. For at least two hundred years, landlords in the region had taken advantage of the fact that families could not live on the pay they provided, so they also acted as moneylenders when predictable crises befell the families in their employ. When Ramphal was just a toddler, his parents took out a small loan that amounted to just a few hun...

The hand of god under a hammer

The art scene gets alive and kicking with three notable art auctions in the coming month that take us through a vivid, historic art scene. Sotheby’s offer Diego Maradona’s 1986 World Cup match shirt worn during both the ‘The Hand of God’ and ‘Goal of the Century’ goals, estimated in excess of £4 million. The shirt is a reminder of that important moment, and is arguably the most coveted football shirt to ever come to auction. Sotheby’s has expanded into sports memorabilia spaces in recent years. It holds the record for the most valuable game-worn sneakers, when Michael Jordan’s earliest known regular season Nike Air Ships sold for $1.5 million, and the most valuable sports memorabilia item, the Olympic manifesto, which made $8.8 million. The current record for any game-worn shirt is held by Babe Ruth’s Yankees road Jersey, sold for $5.64 million in an auction in 2019. But ‘The Hand of God’ is a singular moment not only in the history of sports, but in the history of the 20th century. T...

Old memories and new sips

The setting was a Tuscan home, we were all out in the backyard, lounging after a truly fabulous meal which ranged from Bistecca alla Fiorentina to some truly world class Sangiovese that we had fresh siphoned out of a cask in the cellar below. Suddenly my host for the evening looked at me and said, “I hope you don’t think we eat like this everyday, Magan. Normally, it’s much better.” That was classic Piero Masi humour, wry and sharp always. It wasn’t my first time, but with Piero, it was always fun to be even at the receiving end of his wit which always left you smiling. Sadly, the chief winemaker at Fratelli Vineyards passed away recently and with his passage, Fratelli has lost a winemaker but, more pertinently, India has lost a wine visionary who didn’t come as a foreigner and try to make wine here, top-down and from the outside, but immersed himself deep into the local terroir to truly understand it and tackle it ground up. No doubt then his Sangiovese remains one of my favourite wi...

Art out of the box — The Indian art scene after 2 years of pandemic

The Indian art scene, post-pandemic, is broadly collaborative with new galleries, institutions and audiences playing an important role, ensuring dynamism as well as making it as inclusive as possible. From creating a metaverse simulation of the fair to showcasing new-age artists, Jaya Asokan, fair director of India Art Fair, has taken this collaborative approach to learning and experimenting new ideas as she steps into the physical format of the fair after a gap of two years. She speaks with Vaishali Dar on how the 13th edition of the Indian Art Fair has adapted to the needs of the art community. The fair will be held from April 28-May 1. Excerpts: Is there any transformation in the art world post the pandemic? The Indian art market is picking up at a record rate driven by strong domestic demand. Despite challenging pandemic years, the art community is continuing to grow, whether it is Saffronart’s recent record breaking auction sale that crossed Rs 100 crore this April, or galleries ...

‘Learning photography is nothing but travelling’

By Shubhangi Shah “It was Henri Cartier-Bresson,” said professor Parmanand Dalwadi about who was behind his ‘trip to France’ in the 1970s. A National Institute of Design (NID) alumni, Dalwadi (82) accompanied Bresson, the legendary French photographer on his trip to India in the 1960s. In return, Bresson got him to Paris where he spent nine months, capturing France, its people, their lifestyle and society on camera. Among the “plenty of pictures” that Dalwadi took, 50 are being showcased as a part of the exhibition ‘A Trip to France’ at the ongoing Bonjour India 2022. The event is organised by the Embassy of France in India, Institut français India (French Institute in India), Alliance française and the consulates of France. The exhibition is being showcased across 11 cities in India, including Delhi, where it’s open till April 30. Once in Paris, the now octogenarian photographer explored much of the city on foot. “Walking is the most important thing,” he said. “While walking around,...

Both the Sensex and Nifty ended lower for the second week in a row, dragged by declines in banking and IT counters. IPL 2022: Du Plessis, Hazlewood star in RCB’s 18-run win over Lucknow Super Giants

Royal Challengers Bangalore rode on skipper Faf du Plessis’ breezy 96 and Josh Hazlewood’s brilliant bowling to inflict an 18-run defeat on Lucknow Super Giants in the IPL here on Tuesday. The 37-year-old du Plessis roared back to form after a string of low scores with a 64-ball knock to help RCB post 181 for six after being sent into bat. Pace spearhead Hazlewood (4/25) then picked two wickets upfront and two at the fag end as RCB restricted LSG to 163 for eight to register their fifth win of the season. Both Hazlewood and du Plessis’ brilliant individual performances, though, may be a bit overshadowed by the chatter around the two ball sequence leading to Marcus Stoinis’ wicket in which a wide outside off wasn’t called followed by him shuffling way too much in the next delivery and playing on. Nevertheless, RCB are now second in the points table while LSG slumped to fourth. Opening the innings, du Plessis, who failed to put up a big score since his sensational 88 in RCB’s first ...

Your Money: Block & bulk deals — What is in it for investors?

Block deals and bulk deals, both in buy side and sell side in equity markets, indicate that there is an interest building up in case of buy up or a waning of interest in case of sell. These deals do give investors some important signals regarding the broad trends and the interest among certain specific participants in the market. Block and bulk deals are different and let us discuss the same in detail. Block deals A block deal is defined as a single trade in which shares greater than 5,00,000 in number or more than Rs 10 crore in value are traded. Such deals are transacted during a special trading window called the block deal window. As block deals in the equity market happen during a separate trading window, they are not visible to retail investors either in the electronic order book or in the volume charts in the trading platform. This trading window operates in two shifts of 15 minutes each from 8:45 AM to 9:00 AM as a first shift and from 2:05 PM to 2:20 PM as a second shift. Blo...
